It has been a while since we checked out some original cellphone accessories from phone makers, so getting our hands on the Nokia MD-9 mini speaker was inspiration enough to do a review.

When music on the go is your thing, the MD-9 should be one of the accessories you should look at. Made for travel, it is small at 42mm long and 62mm wide, but there are smaller ones on the market. It also weighs about 90g with the two AAA batteries that power it already inserted, so it isn't heavy and can easily be taken anywhere. It does not come with a carry case or bag, but Nokia did include a way to add a strap, like with their phones. Unfortunately, the strap is also not included. Anyway, not to worry, it is small and light enough to just pop into your bag or trouser pockets.

Although the ball shape of the shox mini speaker has become well recognised, we like the rounded box-like shape of the MD-9. Not only is it nice to look at, but also sits a bit firmer on a flat surface than the ball shaped speakers.

The connection cable with a standard 3.5mm audio jack can be easily stored by winding it around the base of the speaker and the jack clips into the bottom to secure it when on the move, although a 2.5mm jack adapter ships with it. When used, you need to carry it around separately, as it does not fit into the slot when attached.

When it comes to the sound quality, we were quite amazed. The 30mm driver with a Neodymium magnet bumps out quite a lot of sound, but we did notice when it comes to electro sounds at higher volumes, there is a lot of crackling present.

For chilled ballads and soft instrumental music, it was good and we could set the volume a bit higher. In the end, any music at the highest volume level did have some sort of noise or distortion, so it is best to keep to the mid-range volume settings, which is ample to fill a regular bedroom with enough vibes.
If your phone has an FM Radio, you can use the MD-9 to listen to your favourite station, as the connection cable acts as an aerial.

According to Nokia, the two AAA batteries should allow for about 50 hours of play time. All in all, we were impressed.
