iPod Nano 8GB
Christo van Gemert
It's arguable the single most ubiquitous modern device around. It plays music and is synonymous with white earphones. It’s the iPod.
There are various versions of the iPod, of which the Nano is the second smallest. It’s also the sexiest, with the curved aluminium casing easily slipping into your pocket.
The new one sports a video camera built in, which is good to take VGA-quality movies, perfect for doing video blogs. It also has an FM tuner, with a live-pause function and a 15-minute buffer. Even the screen is bigger, all the better for video playback.
There’s almost nothing on which to fault the new Nano. Everything it says on the box is handled with Apple’s trademark efficiency and great design. We could complain about how it feels a bit insubstantial in our hands, as small as it is, but the aluminium body will protect it from lots of abuse. There is the iTunes issue, though: it’s becoming more and more bloated with each release. Maybe this is what Apple can look at next, before refreshing its music players again.
You either want an MP3 player or you don’t. If you do, the Nano is excellent. It’ll play music, and then some. The FM tuner and camera are great additions, along with some of the other new tweaks and features. Get the 16GB model though, for just R500 more than this 8GB version.
