Lenovo T400s Thinkpad
T for Tough
Christo van Gemert
For as long as we can remember, Thinkpads have been “the bomb”. That was back when they were still made by IBM, but as proof of how tough they are: we still have a working model from the pre-Lenovo era. Not even lightning could decommission it.

The T400s is one of Lenovo's business workhorses. It’s super-light at just 1.7kg, and thin enough to fit in any briefcase. Add in a Lenovo travel charger, which is just as thin, and you can kiss unsightly laptop bags goodbye.

It also features dual pointing devices (trackpad and nipple), a Core2 Duo running at 2.4GHz, 2GB of RAM, 250GB hard drive and Lenovo’s legendary build quality – along with Intel vPro, and a “maintenance plan” to back up any breakage or technical issues.

Its modest spec – 2GB of RAM and a 14-inch display – are tradeoffs some might not appreciate. The screen is understandable, since it lends the T400s its diminutive dimensions, but the 2GB of RAM could be a cost-cutting measure. We’d upgrade it to 4GB or more.

Like any business notebook, the T400s is no-frills and the premium price is there for a reason, because of the great support and backup offered. What’ll make it a success is its low weight, small size and excellent battery life. It’ll also be around a lot longer than other notebooks, which makes it an investment rather than an expense.
