LG GM750 phone
Size does matter here
Christo van Gemert
I was really surprised at the small size of this smartphone and, to be honest, I wanted something bigger. I know things are getting smaller and it’s 'cool' to have small, but in some cases smaller isn't always better. The handset is just too tiny to handle comfortably for a man. Maybe, in a South African context, the MG750 is better suited for women. Its sleek and curvy look would also suggest this.
Design and form factor aside, the phone is not half bad as a smartphone and a Windows-based one at that. The screen, although very good and responsive as a touch screen, is simply too little to do justice to the phone and its capabilities. You need to basically use the small stylus to complete almost all the actions of the Windows mobile 6.5 operating system and user interface. The screen is a three-inch TFT Touch colour screen, with 240 x 400 pixel resolution.
The music player does a fair job, but the music sound quality isn’t great. When making and receiving calls the voice audio was very clear, though.
The phone is capable of making video calls, as it has two cameras, one of which is the five-megapixel primary camera for capturing average still photographs and video clips. The camera also features auto focus and basic photo editing functions. Video playback is also supported, so users can download video clips to the phone and watch them. Sadly, the screen is just not big enough to make video watching enjoyable.
The fact that it is 3G capable is great, as it does speed up content downloads and web surfing, as well as receiving e-mails and other general text-based communications. Again, the screen is very small to make texting on the on-screen keyboard very comfortable. Trying with fingers caused lots of mistakes. Using the stylus was better, but took much longer and in a world where time is money, wasted time leaves a sour taste in the mouth. The touch-sensitive navigation key, reminiscent of the square BlackBerry touch sensitive navigation key, was nice to use, though, and aided in manoeuvring through menus and applications.
The GM750 has integrated Assisted GPS with navigation abilities, sports Bluetooth and the must-have Wi-Fi connectivity, as well as the office necessities any smartphone should have - calendar, organiser and document viewer to view Word, Excel, PowerPoint & PDF files.
Battery life was fairly good and with average use the phone lasted about two whole days before needing a good recharge.
It's a really good phone for a smartphone, but the small size of the device and the small screen just don't work for a device of this capability. Maybe petite people will love it
