It’s a tough job being a tech-savvy, internet-obsessed computer junkie. With all the Facebook, Twitter, FourSquare and podcasts going around, there’s hardly enough time to even go out to the shops and get bread and milk, nowadays.

Okay, so the picture we’re trying to paint seems a bit far-fetched. But imagine this: waking up early in the morning, having a fresh pot of coffee waiting for you and as you pour a cup of brew, there’s a ping from the oven and you can have yourself a slice of steaming hot bread. Preferably the crust, with an unhealthily thick layer of butter.

That’s when something like the LG Home Bakery would make perfect sense. While we might not be too busy to fetch bread and milk from the shop, it’s never going to be easy to time those visits to get piping hot, fresh bread. Didn’t think about that, did ya?

Okay, so automated bread makers are nothing new. They’ve been around for a while, but the advances in automation mean that this new unit from LG also offers extra functions like mixing doughs and batters, or stewing jams. Problem is: you’ll need two of these suckers to have the fresh bread arrive at the same time as the fresh jam. At R1 700, it’s not too steep a price to pay for convenience, fresh bread and that bakery smell in your kitchen every morning. The supplied booklet has a variety of recipes for speciality breads, jams and doughs, in varying weights. Why bother with an 800-gramme shop-bought loaf when a 500-gramme home-baked bread will save money?

Best of all? When using mostly dry ingredients, the baking process can be set up using a timer – so waking up, or arriving home, to fresh baked goods is not so far-fetched, after all.
