UNWIND: GAMES

Guitar Hero 5 I rock. Guitar Hero 5 says I do, so it must be true
Nicola Mawson

Even though I’m still only playing at beginner level – having never played a guitar in my life – I’m so enjoying my new toy that other car drivers are giving me weird looks, because I’ve taken to air guitar while idling along in traffic. My favourite tune so far is Queen and Bowie’s Under Pressure, especially at high enough volumes to annoy my equally annoying neighbours.

Guitar Hero is a great way to unwind after a long slog, while at the same time being challenging. The pack comes complete with a pseudo guitar that has five chord buttons, a strumming bar and a navigation button, which you use to follow the directions on screen - almost like following the words when singing Karaoke.

Another bonus is that I can add on drums and other toys at a later stage as I go along. Sure, it’s not cheap, but my sanity is worth far more than the R1 000 in gift vouchers I shelled out at the weekend.
There are 85 songs by 83 different original artists from which to choose – from hard rock to more mellow tunes. That’s quite a selection and should keep me busy for hours.

Guitar Hero 5 The ability to add players and form a rock band is also a nice touch, as is the option to play bass or melody, and move up the ladder. One day, I’ll stop being a beginner. I’m playing on a Nintendo Wii, but the bundle can be used on pretty much any gaming platform, so you don’t need to buy an Xbox to strum along.

Guitar Hero 5 the fifth main entry in the series. It was developed by Neversoft and published by RedOctane and Activision, and released internationally in September 2009 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation and Wii. Just like its preceding title, Guitar Hero World Tour, Guitar Hero 5 is geared towards playing in a four-person band experience, including lead and bass guitar, drums, and vocals.

So far, the game has been played pretty much every day, and become a point of competition, with hubby and me desperate to prove we can outdo each other. So far, he plays better than I do – but I’ll get those hours in.

Who knows – maybe it will turn me into a real rock star!
