UNWIND: GAMES

Fifa Soccer World Cup 2010 WiiGame Review: Fifa Soccer World Cup 2010
By Nicola Mawson

The official 2010 Fifa World Cup South Africa Wii game allows everyone to take part in the soccer spectacular that is set to kick off on Friday when Bafana Bafana play Mexico in the opening match.

However, while I am all caught up in soccer fever – and will be shouting for my team come Friday – this really is a game for soccer fans, and those who understand the tricky bits, like the offside rule.

The game has a distinctly South African flavour and feel, and even boasts the mascot, Zakumi. In fact, you can build Zakumi’s dream team by making up your own team, choosing a logo and colours, and then playing the other countries in a bid to poach their players if you win.

If you’re not so good at using the remote as a kicking foot – the only real drawback I could find – there is also a practice level that allows you to sharpen your shooting skills. An added bonus is that you can play against up to three friends, and can also take the game online.

The game also comes with tips, and tells you how to get that penalty kick just right. However, playing is not that challenging once you have mastered the remote functions.

Not being someone who really gets soccer, I passed the remote over to the husband and watched him have great fun winning a few matches and shouting at the telly if he missed a shot.

The game is definitely a great idea for soccer fans, and a decent way of getting little ones to while away the time between matches – assuming it’s too cold to kick around a ball outside. The graphics are rather good, and the matches are quite realistic.
