Nintendo has dominated the handheld gaming market since the late ‘80s with the release of the 8-bit Game Boy. More than 20 years later, the company is still going strong and has announced its latest handheld, the Nintendo DSi XL It is the newest addition to the DS range.

Digital Life attended the media launch of the console two weeks ago and has since been playing around with it. We were pleasantly surprised at how entertaining the little device is.

When you purchase the console (available in South Africa from 30 April), it comes preloaded with Dr Kawashima’s Little Bit of Brain Training: Arts Edition.

It’s a fun way to exercise your brain for just a few minutes every day. The Arts edition lets you train on various activities, from playing games, acting and drawing.

Dr Kawashima’s Little Bit of Brain Training: Arts EditionBrain-training activities include reading aloud, playing photo memory, word scramble, word buster, etc. The more you play, the more games you unlock.

You can also select themes to try out. For example, if you select history, which is a drawing game, you will be asked to draw Cleopatra. It’s not as difficult as it sounds. It’s loads of fun and only takes up a few minutes of your time.

You are entitled to one brain age check per day. The lower your brain age, the “healthier” your brain is, with lowest age being 20 years old. It can get a little addictive as you try to better your previous scores and brain age.

It’s the perfect compliment to the DSi XL.
