UNWIND: GAMES

Ghostbusters
(PS3, PC, Xbox 360)

Christo van Gemert
There have been Ghostbusters titles before, based on the movies, for eight-bit consoles, but with modern technology and graphically superior consoles available now, fans are getting another dose of the game.

The game starts off in Manhattan, two years after the events of the second film. Players take on the role of a newcomer, simply referred to as “rookie”, who also gets to be the guinea pig for many of Egon’s (who’s that?) new technologies.

In this game you and the crew have to deal with the situation after the Ghostbusters HQ is rocked by a huge PKE (psychokinetic energy) shockwave.

There is also new weaponry in this version of the game. The proton pack and ghost traps can be upgraded, along with the PKE meter being used for tracking down ghosts.

All of the action is fairly easily controlled. The third-person camera rarely falters or annoys, which leaves more time to take in the surroundings and enjoy a fantastic soundtrack: every ghost battle has a dramatic orchestral score to highlight the drama.

In a first for Ghostbusters, you can now also take the action online. Multiplayer modes see you capturing ghosts with up to three friends, together or against each other.

The graphics quality differs in various scenes and if too busy, the frame rate slows down noticeably, making for a very hiccupy play.

Adding to this is the strange pacing in the story mode with what feels like very little continuity. One minute you’re fighting ghosts in a hotel and the next you’ll be walking around for five minutes trying to track down ethereal activity. Then you’re outside facing off with the Marshmallow Man.

If you are a fan of the Ghostbusters movies, you’ll like the game. It makes for a solid gaming experience.
