Ice Age 2 – The Meltdown
Nicola Mawson
“They never thaw it coming” is the blurb on the back of the DVD box. That pretty much sums up the game – a cute one-player task set in the world in which the Ice Age creatures live. The Wii players have to help them save it from melting.
I loved it.
It’s cute, the graphics are great, and some of the levels are pretty challenging, even for adults although it is targeted at kids and the box warns that it contains “mild violence”. The game is loosely based on the movie, and tracks the evolutionary process from Ice Age through to meltdown.
The start of the game is when a golden acorn falls into an underwater river, and the chase is on. The acorn appears throughout the game. At each stage, Scrat and Sid – the two main proponents – have to do certain tasks, like collecting acorns. Sid is a sloth, while Scrat is a, well, a jumpy animal thing. He has been called a muskrat by some. He does, however, twitch and jump and double-jump and is quite endearing. Some of the challenges are difficult, and I did end up ‘phoning a friend’ for Sid’s Slippery Sloth Slide Challenge after giving up on it.
In each level, you need to fight monsters, and jump, which is where you get to really put the Wii remote to good use. There are also digging and swimming challenges, which take a bit of practice lest you run out of air and drown.
Frankly, I cannot wait for Ice Age 3 to appear wrapped in paper and gifted to me.
