3D to go
By Christo van Gemert
Nintendo’s DS has been a fantastic success – selling 130 million units in six years – despite initial apprehension over its dual-screen platform. Now available in four different versions (DS, DS Lite, DSi and DSi XL), it’s perhaps time for an all-new model to be introduced, which is exactly what Nintendo is doing with the 3DS.
As the name cleverly implies, the new DS will have 3D capabilities. While the bottom screen retains its viewing dimension and touchscreen capabilities, the top screen will be autostereoscopic, or simply put, 3D, without the need for special glasses. The 3D effect will be adjustable via a slider, and can even be turned off completely.
Nintendo’s closest partners have confirmed they are working on titles that will definitely make use of the 3D effect not just visually, but also as a gameplay mechanic.
Currently there is no confirmed date for the arrival of the 3DS in South Africa, but the international release date is some time next year.
