In our book, anything that is free these days is good, so FNB Personal Cheque Account holders should be very happy to hear that they will now get up to 1GB of free internet data every month for an entire year.

This free internet data offering is part of the bank’s “Cheque Rewards” Programme, to attract new clients and to retain existing clients in an ever more competitive banking environment.

The data service is made possible through FNB’s Internet Service Provider (ISP) business, FNB Connect, enabling its Cheque Account clients to experience the internet completely free of charge.

The bank hopes to also sway customers, though using the free data service, to move away from the traditional banking channels of going to branches, and rather adopt internet or online banking. The bank is adamant that online banking channels are more convenient and cost-effective to customers.

According to Farren Roper, operations manager at FNB Connect, this campaign will run until 31 July 2011, after which the offer will be reviewed.

And all you need to take advantage of this offer is to have an FNB Personal Cheque Account which, the bank stresses, must be “in good standing”.

This does not, however, mean that customers can surf any and all sites on the internet. “We allow our clients to interact with FNB for free with access to www.fnb.co.za and www.fnbconnect.co.za. Certain social networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter as well as learning sites like www.learn.co.za and university websites are also offered for free every day between 7pm and 11pm,” Roper explains.

So, even if not completely free, having free access to do your banking will help to keep those expenses in check.
