Intel adds to lineup
Theo Boshoff
Chip maker Intel has just unveiled a new NAND Flash solid state drive (SSD), which it says is affordable for consumers who’d like to gain access to the performance and advantages of PCs with SSDs. These were previously very expensive.

The new SSD, called the X25-V Value SATA SSD, is a 40GB drive focussed for use in netbooks and dual-drive desktop PCs. According to Intel, the drive's wholesale price, sold in 1 000 unit quantities, is US$125, which means consumers will be able to buy computers featuring this technology for cheaper.

SSDs offer users faster PC performance, almost four times faster than a traditional 7 200RPM hard disk drive (HDD).

For users with a PC featuring a traditional HDD, the X25-V SSD can be added in a dual-drive setup whereby the operating system and process-intensive applications can be loaded onto the SSD, for faster and enhanced performance while the HDD is used as a high capacity data storage unit.

In simple terms, an SSD speeds up PCs operations, like starting up the computer. With the SSD users won't have to wait minutes before they can start working on the computer anymore. Everything is faster, even opening a software application or massive graphic files, which tends to take forever.
