LG shows off 3D
By Theo Boshoff
LG showed off its latest 3D TV technology, as part of its Infinia range, at a press function in Johannesburg last night, which will be locally available in June at selected retail outlets.
According to LG South Africa CEO Peet van Rooyen, the new LX9500 3D TV is the first-ever full 3D LED LCD TV in the market, sporting full backlit LED. Other 3D TVs on the market only have side, top or bottom partial backlit options.
As a full 3D backlit LED flat panel, the 22.3mm, borderless display is very bright and incorporates TruMotion 400Hz, eliminating motion blur - especially when watching fast action content – to enable images to appear crisp and clear. The TV also has a staggering contrast ratio of 10 000 000:1 and features localised spot control.
Like most 3D TVs available today, the LX500 also requires 3D glasses, which syncs with the TV’s refresh rate. In the case of the LX500, however, it is the first TV to also incorporate dual IR emitters to sync the TV and glasses. This affords viewers a wider viewing angle of between 30 and 60 degrees. It also increases the distance at which viewers can view 3D content comfortably and with crisp images. The glasses, according to the company, offer in the region of 40 hours of viewing on a full charge.

When not watching 3D content, the TV acts as a full 1080p HD 2D display and through NetCast and a broadband internet connection offers access to online video and movie content.
Viewers can also sync the TV with a webcam to make Skype video calls as a fully integrated communications option straight from their living-rooms or bedrooms, or wherever the TV is installed.
LG also showed off its newly launched Blue-ray player, which Van Rooyen says was developed due to the lack of current 3D content sources and signals. The Blue-ray player, as well as home theatre devices, can be wirelessly paired with the LX9500 TV through DLNA and an optional DLNA wireless dongle. The TV also supports wireless AV links to set up your surround sound without a cable in sight.
Other 3D content can also be instantly displayed on the LX9500, due to it supporting Multi Picture Format (MPF), meaning users do need a computer to facilitate the rendering of 3D content to be viewed.
The LX9500 is available in a 47-inch or 55-inch model. Pricing for these products is not available as yet.
