New Leica hits the streets
By Theo Boshoff
The new Leica S2 camera system has hit the streets and is definitely for the person serious about photography. According to the camera maker, the S2 is purpose-built for the highest performance, without compromise and takes the 35mm standard to new heights with its image sensor sporting a resolution of 37.5 megapixels.
The 30mm x 45mm CCD sensor features an aspect ratio of 3:2 and an area nearly 60% larger than that of a traditional 35mm camera for increased image quality.
The camera also features a light sensitivity of up to ISO 1250, which means good quality photos with little image-noise can be taken in lower lighting conditions.
The camera has also been paired down in terms of controls on the body, without limiting functionality, the company says, making operating the S2 much easier.
The S2’s high-speed Maestro image processor chip and its additional camera control processor are said to allow for fast signal processing of up to 1.5 images a second at maximum resolution.
Also great is that the camera features slots for both Compact Flash and SD, with an option for saving RAW format Adobe DNG data onto Compact Flash and JPEG to the SD card, simultaneously.
