Fans of Linkin Park who happen to be gamers and own an Apple touchscreen device will be happy to know that the band is releasing a new gaming app – Linkin Park 8-Bit Rebellion!

The gaming app has been in the making for a year as a joint project between the band and game developer, Artificial Life, and features all the band members as characters in the game.

The idea was to create a heightened app experience for music fans and gamers alike.

Linkin Park vocalist Mike Shinoda, says: “The game is not just made for Linkin Park fans. Anyone will be able to play and enjoy 8-Bit Rebellion. My bandmates and I grew up playing games like ‘Metroid,’ ‘Donkey Kong,’ ‘Zelda,’ ‘Space Invaders,’ ‘Mega Man’ and ‘Rygar.’ We wanted this game to have the feel of a vintage game, and a big part of it was the music."

According to the band, the new game plays like a full-on action-adventure game, where players must free Linkin Park’s idyllic 8-bit world from the clutches of the evil PixxelKorp, whose corrupt agents have stolen the band’s music.

Linkin Park 8-Bit Rebellion! The mission will take players through several districts in the game, which are all based on individual band members, where players will have to fight off the PixxelKorp forces, hunt down the lost tracks and save the band from pending disaster. The ultimate goal of a player is to become an 8-bit hero!

The game includes original and 8-bit interpretations of some of the band’s greatest hits, such as “New Divide” and “One Step Closer”.

The game further allows players to create avatars and with the online component players can also incorporate IM chats with friends and other gamers interwoven with some other online functions, such as news updates. The game, however, does not have to be played only while online and connected. It can also be played in offline mode and on connecting again, the player’s progress will be automatically updated on the server.

As a bonus, players will get an exclusive song called Blackbird, which they will be able to listen to when completing the game. This, according to the band, is also the first time ever that a band has released a new song through a mobile game app.

It seems that the game is not only a game, but also wants to get a message across about piracy issues and artists and their copyright and the like.
