Mobile content galore
By Theo Boshoff
Mobile operator Vodacom says it is shaking up the way it is bringing videos, music and games to its subscribers over the next couple of weeks.
The company says it is taking a new direction in supplying mobile content, by partnering with various content providers to sort out the content side of things while it concentrates on its core business of providing the best network to host the content on.
The company has already started this new strategy by offering subscribers access to TV channels and video-on-demand content through a partnership with DStv Mobile and the On Demand Group.
Vodacom SA MD Shameel Joosub concedes that viewing videos on a cellphone is not new, but he believes that with these partnerships, more titles are being brought to the public than ever before.
“With the new breed of smartphones and high speeds possible on our network, it has gone to a whole new level. Imagine being able to catch up with Big Brothers All Stars or keep track of the game on SuperSport Blitz while stuck in a queue at the supermarket, or, for that matter, share your favourite bits from that Desperate Housewives or Sex and the City episode while relaxing with friends” he adds.
Jooseb notes that all the new content is immediately available via Vodafone Live! for all Vodacom customers, and include 11 channels on the DStv Mobile service, which includes SuperSport Blitz, SuperSport Live Events, Channel O, Trace TV, Africa Magic, CNN and Big Brother Africa All Stars.
Programmes on offer as a result of the partnership with the On Demand Group include The Sopranos, Entourage, Sex and the City, Desperate Housewives, Lost, South Park, and hundreds of music videos.
The subscription services can be activated for R75 per month or R20 per week for the On Demand Group’s programmes. Those subscribing during August and September will get their first month’s or week’s subscription free.
The DStv Mobile service subscription will cost customers R59 per month or R19 per week, subject to a fair usage policy.
Vodacom subscribers can get more information on these services by sending an SMS message with ‘TV’ in the body text to 31116.
