More Maps for 2010
Theo Boshoff
The 2010 Soccer World Cup has basically given all mapping data companies the opportunity to do some much-needed work collecting more data of our local road network and make some changes to their mapping data sets.
One such company is MapIT, in conjunction with its international shareholder Tele Atlas, which is including more detailed logistical information in their digital mapping data set to make life easier for people attending the World Cup in June, who will be navigating our South African roads, and finding their way through cities where matches are to be played.
According to MapIT, the new information that will be added include things such as road closures around major matches, the location of stadium entrance gates, where ‘Fan Parks’ will be situated and drop-off areas. Also built into the map data are 3D views of over 50 key landmarks in the nine host cities.
The company, however, makes it clear that this new soccer edition of the mapping solution will not only be for consumers, but will also benefit local emergency services, vehicle tracking organisations and fleet managers to ease their jobs.
Danny Grobben, GM at Tele Atlas South Africa, says: "The special map release allows our navigation and local search partners to deliver solutions for an enjoyable, hassle-free World Cup experience.”
This special version of the company's map database will include updated data on South Africa and more accurate coverage of the nine host cities, as well as roads in Lesotho and Swaziland, which includes 228 152 Points of Interest (POIs).
The offering will be available to everyone in early April, the company says.
