Toshiba shows off
By Theo Boshoff
As part of Toshiba’s new Masterpiece marketing campaign launched this week in South Africa, the company showed off a few new products, with three standing out as crowd-pullers.
First up is the Libretto W100 dual-screen Windows 7 mini laptop. The Libretto sports two seven-inch multi-touch screens and, according Andre Rossouw, regional GM for Toshiba South Africa, is aimed at consumers who want to be at the forefront of creative mobile computing. “The Libretto W100 takes user interaction to a new level, offering a distinctive and intuitive method of conceiving and capturing ideas,” Rossouw says.
It can be used as a normal laptop and features a virtual keyboard with haptic feedback, which can be turned on and off by the push of a button. The keyboard is not bad to type on. The device can also be used as an eReader and be held vertically, using both screens to read, like you would a traditional book.

Next up is the ultraslim smart companion, the Toshiba AC100, which is a nifty small and very light laptop, which Toshiba says has always on capability. It runs the Android operating system and needs less than a second to wake up from standby mode. According to the company, the AC100 can stay in standby mode for up to a week.
“Our smart companion, the AC100, is a member of the mobile internet device segment that combines the best of two product categories. Like a smartphone, it is always on, while offering the convenience of a clamshell netbook with a bigger screen and a full-size keyboard,” says Rossouw.
The third new product is the Portégé R700, which the company claims is Europe’s lightest and thinnest laptop so far. It is a 13-inch laptop for the business person, and weighs in at only 1.3kg
The R700 also features new innovations, says Rossouw, including better heat management with a newly designed airflow system, a honeycomb chassis construction, and a stackable memory chip design, which the company says can accommodate up to 8GB RAM.
It can also, depending on what tasks are being performed and which programmes are being used, have a battery life of up to eight hours on a single charge, making it a good travelling companion.
The pricing for these devices are as follows:
Toshiba Libretto W100 – From R11 999
Toshiba AC100 – From R3 999
Toshiba Portégé R700 – R12 999
