Off the beaten track

The 4x4 junkies will now be able to more easily navigate through Southern Africa as a result of mapping company Navteq, and eco-destination company Tracks4Africa's, collaboration in gathering and sharing mapping content.Navteq, in conjunction with Tracks4Africa, has a new offering called the Off-Road Guide, which combines the two companies' mapping data and outdoor content to deliver a navigation solution for people travelling into Southern Africa, where the roads are few and far between.
Tracks4Africa is a community-based project, where people who frequently travel the roads in Southern Africa collect mapping data, along with outdoor data, such as where waterholes are and which low-lying bridges are closed during which times. That information is then used by Naviteq to disseminate to consumers.
The information relates to off-roading in South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho, Swaziland and Mozambique, and includes over 40 points of interests (POIs) and logging/accommodation information.
The offering also include information on which off-road tracks are difficult and which are easy, where various natural landmarks are situated, as well as where biking and hiking trails are, all with turn-by-turn navigation.
So if you are planning that trip to Mozambique for some diving and killer Peri-Peri prawns, this off-road guide could just make the experience more enjoyable. Remember, the journey to your destination is just as part of the holiday as anything else. |
