Fast, faster, ADSL
By Theo Boshoff
Those who can’t live without the internet but hate the slow internet transfer speeds that we as South Africans have become accustomed to will be happy to hear that Telkom’s largest network upgrade will allow for even faster ADSL speeds.
From this week, Telkom will be offering increased speeds of up to 10 Mbps. This is, however, only available to those fortunate enough to live in an area where Telkom’s technology and switching centres (Exchanges) are enabled to run the bandwidth services.
Telkom customers and individuals wanting to make use of the increased internet speed services will have to log on to the Telkom internet website or the following links - http://www.telkom.co.za/products_services/dsl/ordering.html or http://www.telkom.co.za/products_services/dsl/conditions.html to find out if their area is supported.
The company has, however, made it clear that there is a phased approach to rolling out the service across the nation, and the areas where the faster ADSL service will be available will increase. Says Telkom: “All upgrades, therefore, remain subject to localised line conditions and the type of equipment available at the nearest exchange.”
The speed upgrade, according to Telkom, will be free of charge to users already on the company’s ADSL package.
