Standalone display
By Theo Boshoff
PC maker Acer has unveiled the D241H LCD 24-inch widescreen display, which it believes is more than a mere display, offering consumers usage without having to be connected to a PC.
The D241H, says the company, allows users to view online media, organise their schedules as well as get real-time news on the screen, without it being connected to a PC, because the monitor already features an integrated computer and WiFi connectivity, enabling web access.
The display, notes Acer, features eight toolkits with widget-based functions, which include calendar, poster, weather, news, clock, video, music, and digital photo frame.
Three of these widgets can be displayed on screen at one time, which means users can, for instance, watch a video, check out the latest news and see what is on their calendar schedule for the day, all at the same time
Josef Chvala, product manager at Acer South Africa, says the D241H serves as an updated version of the family fridge bulletin board, while simultaneously acting as an electronic photo frame or video screen.
The display supports full HD content with a native resolution of 1 920 x 1 080 and sports a two-millisecond (ms) response time, which is great for watching fast action videos or playing action games.
The display also features Acer’s OD (overdrive) technology which, the company says, improves grey-to-grey levels of moving images and thus makes for a better viewing experience.
The company’s Adaptive Contrast Management (ACM) technology allows for an 80 000:1 contrast ratio, with the ACM analysing every scene, adjusting the images frame by frame for the clearest image.
And the bonus, if you like, is that the display is more energy-efficient than traditional displays.
