Talking phones
By Theo Boshoff
Mobile network provider Vodacom has released new cellphones for the visually impaired, to assist these users with their communication needs.
The smartphones include the Nokai E52 and N86 handheld devices, with text-to-speech software preloaded that allows for the conversion of text-based information, such as SMS messages, to speech.
This, says the company, will enable the visually impaired users to listen to their text messages, as well as other functions on the phone such as their contacts, the phone’s battery strength status, and the signal strength in the area the user is in.
Says Shameel Joosub, Vodacomn SA MD: "Mobile communications are an essential part of modern life and we’re thrilled to be able to supply a new range of speaking phones to those visually impaired people that might otherwise be excluded."
Vodacom also has a Specific Needs contact centre, for users who need assistance with regard to any special needs products. The contact centre can be reached on 12580, from a Vodacom cellphone, or on 082 12580 from any other phone.
If you prefer e-mail communications, send your queries to 12580@vodacom.co.za.
