Have your say
By Theo Boshoff
Consumers don’t have to feel excluded in decision-making anymore, as the Wireless Application Service Providers’ Association of SA (WASPA) has invited the public to comment on the proposed amendments to its Codes
of Conduct.
The Codes of Conduct are aimed at protecting consumers of mobile content and services, and it is the first time that consumers can give their input to assist WASPA to carry out its mandate of industry self-regulation.
According to WASPA, the primary objective of the Code of Conduct is to ensure that consumers can use mobile services with confidence. It also sets standards for advertising mobile application services and includes a framework for the provision of services by members.
Mike Hainebach, chairman of the WASPA Code of Conduct Committee, says: “WASPA wants to help foster the spirit of accountability by ensuring future versions of its Code of Conduct are shaped by the very consumers it is designed to protect.”
If you are a consumer who wants to be involved in setting standards and ensuring the protection of mobile services and content in South Africa, visit the http://www.waspa.org.za/public-comment page and have your say.
According to Hainebach, WASPA will also be applying to the Department of Trade & Industry for its Code of Conduct to be recognised under the Consumer Protection Act coming into effect in October this year.
