Nashua Mobile and IS
in cahoots
By Theo Boshoff
The guys from Nashua Mobile and Internet Solutions (IS) are bringing us VoIS, a new voice-over WiFi, to help drive down the cost of mobile phone calls.
The VoIS Mobile solution will enable subscribers to make cheaper voice calls from cellphones using a WiFi network at office parks and at the over 750 IS Hotspots around the country.
In terms of the partnership, Nashua Mobile will resell IS’s VoIS Mobile product to its corporate subscribers and IS will offer mobile contracts from Nashua Mobile to its clients and client service and support for the VoIS service will be handled by Nashua Mobile.
The solution makes use of IS’ existing Fixed VoIS network infrastructure, which includes interconnection agreements with all the major operators for VoIS Mobile, IS says.
Off-net mobile calls are charged at R1.40 a minute, calls from PABXs to registered VoIS Mobile cellphones at 50c a minute and VoIP phone calls between registered cellphones are free.
The VoIS Mobile solution is currently enabled for use with WiFi-capable Symbian cellphones, but work is being done to also support Android-based phones, those running Windows Mobile, BlackBerry phones and the iPhone.
Subscribers download a small application on their phones, which will then automatically route calls via the cheaper WiFi option if the user is near an IS Hotspot or a corporate WiFi network.
