UNWIND: Q&A

Jeremy Nell Q&A - Jeremy Nell
Cartoonist, creator of Digital Life’s Noob comic strip

Q: When did you first realise you had talent and wanted to be a cartoonist?
A: I have been drawing cartoons since I was little, but only decided to become a professional when I realised how much I didn't like the corporate world and traffic.

Q: Are your drawings done digitally? If so, what do you use?
A: I use a Wacom drawing tablet. But this is because, when I became a cartoonist, I couldn't afford the expensive inks and paper that get used up so quickly. Investing in a tablet turned out to be a cheaper long-term decision. I now love the tablet and know that the purists hate it, which makes me love it even more.

Q: As a cartoonist, do you need to keep up with the latest technology?
A: It’s impossible to keep up with the Jones', but I do try to stay informed as far as possible (in what interests me). Also, I made sure that no one with the surname of Jones lives near me.

Q: When a new idea comes to mind, what do you do? Write it down, save it on your phone or try to remember it later?
A: This is a great question because there is no official pattern. Funnily, I do use my cellphone to store ideas. This is because it is often nearby. That said, my fiancée is also often nearby, so I sometimes use her to store ideas.

Q: What gadget is on top of your wish list and why?
A: I don't really have one. Maybe a pen that shoots lasers at irritating car guards who suddenly appear out of nowhere.

Q: Is it a difficult market to break into? Do you have any tips for wannabe cartoonists out there?
A: Yes, it is very difficult. There are no rules and there is nothing that you can officially study, so most of it comes with years of no sleep, no money, and baked beans on toast. My only tip would be to stay passionate at all times, put your pride in your pocket, and don't tell too many people where you live after you've drawn a religious cartoon.
