UNWIND: Q&A

Q&A: Leon Potgieter
Graphic Designer

Q: What is your favourite design programme at the moment and why?

A: I use Adobe Design Suite CS4, and Cinema 4D. Its cross platform integration makes it a breeze to work with and saves a lot of time.

Q: How has design technology (hardware and software) changed over the past couple of years?

A: I am not a big techie, but Apple still has, in my opinion, the best machines to work on, not only for their power and graphics but also for their look and feel. It’s just a design thing, I guess. Wacom has definitely improved with their drawing tablets and it is fantastic to work with. A pen is so much better than a mouse, especially when it comes to drawing and conceptualising ideas.

Q: What design applications and programmes would you recommend for people wanting to get into graphic design, that are not professional packages and don't cost a fortune?

A: If you want to get into the industry, you have to invest in the Adobe suite. Start off with the standard package, which includes Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign. If you want to get into digital, then Flash and Dreamweaver are a must. You’ll simply have to learn the software, it’s a trial and error thing. And, by the way, unfortunately all graphic design software is expensive.

Q: Is a tablet, like a Wacom, a must for graphic designers and why do you say so?

A: It depends. If you like drawing, then I’d say yes. Some people like a mouse, others like a pen. It’s a matter of personal preference.

Q: What monitor would you recommend to attain "true" colour representation on screen?

A: Apple still has the best monitors out there. They’re expensive, though.

Q: Do you use a Mac or a PC?

A: PC? What’s a PC? I use a Mac, of course.
