Minimise it
If you are using Windows, you can minimise everything on your screen by pressing the Windows key and M.
Switching screens
To switch screens on a Windows machine without your fingers leaving the keyboard, press alt+tab. A window will come up with all of your active screens and you can press tab to move between them, holding down control at all times. When you release your fingers, you will go to the highlighted screen.
Do a Defrag
This one should go without saying. However, I am always surprised at how few people regularly do this — or how many IT admins neglect to set up machines to do this regularly. Regardless of which Windows desktop OS you use, make sure you either manually defragment or set the machine up to automatically defragment. When machines get too fragmented, they suffer serious performance degradation. Usually, the built-in Windows defrag tool works fine. If you are looking for something a little better, try Defraggler. It can work on a whole disk or just a part of one.

Need a dictionary
Need to quickly find the meaning of a word, but don't have a dictionary handy? Simply go to Google on your PC or cellphone and type "define: (and the word)" in the search bar, and the various definitions will be displayed.
Make your own desktop background
Right-click a blank area on your desktop and select "Properties" from the resulting menu. Go to Settings and see what size your desktop is under "screen resolution."
Use a photo editing program to create a background with those same dimensions (e.g. 1 024 by 768 pixels) and save the picture.
Right-click on your desktop and go to "Properties" again, go to Desktop and click the "browse" button. Select your picture. Click on "Open" and you will see a preview of how your picture will look on the desktop. If you are happy with it, click "OK".
