I finished Metal Slug!!!
Posted by: DevilTrigger on Jul 14, 2010
I'm an avid gamer, and also broke. That leads to a rather tortured individual who ogles all the latest games as they come out but is torn at the fact that they can't play them. I'm still stuck on the original chunky incarnation of the PS2, let alone the PS3 or Xbox360.
I craved new games though, so thought hey, instead of trying to move forward, how about I get retro.
Enter emulators. For those who aren't into gaming, an emulator is a program you can run on your computer that emulates an old now defunct gaming platform. You can find emulators for you PSX, your Gameboys, and all the way back to stuff like the SNES and the Sega MegaDrive. My fave by miles though, is Mame32.
This baby emulates all those arcades games you played back in the day. Practically everyone had a shop on the corner run by a happy old person (Looking back, that person probably was a pedophile) who would welcome the kids in to blow all their change on sweets and old beauties such as Snow Bros, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, and good old Metal Slug. And hey using Mame32, after all these years, I finally finished Metal Slug!
Calculating the costs, if I had done it back when I was a kid, I would have stood in front of the damn machine for over an hour and spent like 50 bucks with the amount of times I died and had to continue.
But hey, nobody actually ever finished those games, did they? They were about good simple fun, and a way to kill a bit of time and change. It's actually kinda scary when you compare it to how serious the gaming world is today, and kinda ironic to note that while the new games constantly strive to be as innovative and feature filled as they can be, the golden oldies still beat em hands down.
Maybe it's just the nostalgia value, but I'd choose walking left to right and killing everything that comes my 2D way over just about any next gen game around.
