The demise of the CD will not be a good thing

I read an article in a newspaper which said the CD may not be available in future because of digital distribution. This is when you buy things off the internet like music, videos and games. This would exclude a lot of people.
When you buy something over the internet you have to pay with a credit card. Many people choose not to have a credit card because it encourages debt. A lot of people cannot afford to buy an MP3 player to transfer music from their computer. Anyway, MP3 players can get lost much easier than CDs. To make the situation worse, a lot of people don’t have internet access. Imagine how many people will be left out in the cold if CDs go out of use.
As for videos, do we really want computers to become our TVs? I wouldn’t. Their screen is too small. It is bad for your eyes to sit in front of a computer for too long. And this would encourage weight gain.
Downloading things from the internet and listening to music uses a lot of bandwidth, which is like air time for your computer. It controls how much you use the internet. A movie would take about twice the average South African bandwidth. And what if you want to give music to a friend who lives far away? You can post it without a CD, and most email accounts won’t allow you to send music.
If you don’t like CDs because they can get scratched, simply store them well. I have had my CDs for years and they don’t get scratched. If they do from old age, I just copy it onto another disc. Doing that will give you its original quality. |
