Is it time for a new phone?
Posted by: DBS on Jul 16, 2010
And if so what? is the next question.
I have been using a Nokia 7610 for nearly 6 years and it has been a very good hone. However the keypad is now starting to play up and so I decided that I should start the investigation into what I should look at.
I first thought about what I use a phone for.
I talk on it
I send SMS
I access the web
I use it as a modem for my PDA
Occassional pictures or videos
So any replacement must meet this as minimum standards. Being financially very hyper cautious at the moment as I don't have a fortune lying in the bank, I also want the purchase to impact as little as possible on my current budget. At the moment I am spending about R100 to R150 per month on pay as you go. (I know it may not be the financially best method but then I don't spend hours on a phone)
The features available now are truly amazing with push email, camera technology that is better than my digital camera or video camera. So which new features might I use?
FM Radio probably
GPS very likely but I have a very fast GPS for the JHB area sitting between my ears.
Email/web access yes as long as the screen is a reassonable size and close to the PDA size.
I looked then at my current service provider and what they have on offer and it basically comes down to 3 phones in descending cost:
Nokia 5230 (stretches the budget a bit but is a touch phone)
Nokia 2710 (has Maps)
Nokia 7230
The 5230 does impress and has impressed independent reviewers. The 2710 not 3G nor is the 7230.
All three would meet the basic requiremetns but only the 5230 meets some of my cool to have.
So does anyone out there have an opinion as to which I should go for?
