Outlook my foot!

Posted by: Erised on May 09, 2010
There is only one thing that annoys me greatly about computer based e-mail; Lack of independence.
I like freedom just as much as I like independence, and if there is anything that compromises that. It is a thorn in my sight.

Just recently, I tried to show a few learners the “ins and outs” of Microsoft outlook (To the extent o my knowledge). I configured my “webmail.co.za” e-mail address to work with outlook. It was much easier to configure webmail than Gmail, yahoo mail and windows live/hotmail. They might work better as default mail clients however on behalf of outlook on your default internet programs settings. Microsoft office online has a possible solution here.

After I got the settings proper and the internet connected, it started downloading my e-mails on to the computer, notifying me of each and every mail that it was acquiring. It was a job well done for the day and my demonstration was as practical as the frustration afterwards.

I couldn’t find my mails when I browsed my “web” mail. There was absolutely nothing in the inbox, not even spam! I was left with no alternative but to go back to the D&*777%*& office. By the way, how do you recover mails from a stolen computer? Our security on and off the web is either way our responsibility and I feel that what I can keep on the net, rather I keep it there; out of the way.

Anyhow I get messages like “outlook can compress your messages…, to secure hard disk space, compress, move, archive, blah, blah, blah.” I am sick of that. I would rather use free back-up service on the net like on most web based e-mail servers i.e. SkyDrive from hotmail. Most webmail servers have a whole lot of space so you won’t need to delete any of your important mails.

I am really comfortable with my stuff on the web, so how do I upload all my mails including the important mails back to my webmail servers? Anyone…! Maybe synchronizing with hotmail might just do the trick!
