Work from Home the Digital Set Up
Posted by: DBS on Aug 11, 2010
I mentioned previously that my director suggested that I consider working from home rather than coming in to the office and my sales manager agreed.
I explained that I had done some initial calculations and that I felt it would pay me economically to do it.
One of the items I need access to is the internet. Our CRM package and fountain of customer information is a web based one and I would obvioulsy need access to the internet. This is not a problem as I have an ADSL connection and ISP capabilities (3GB package ) through Telkom. Up to now this has been geneerally acceptable to the family. The prime users of band width are Son One and Son Two in their quest for higher learning social interaction and entertainment. We regularly use the allotted 3GB so I had been looking at going uncapped and dropping Telkom as ISP. This has a number of implications like it is the email address for personal use that I have used for about 15 years.
I decided a wait measure and see approach would be a better one. If I had to top up then so be it. (Telkom would charge R79 per GB and at that price it was still more economical to work at home rather than commute.
OH JOY!! on 2nd August I got an email from Telkom advising me that I would now have 5GB of bandwidth per month and after that pay at R45 per GB so some pressure is off there.
Internet sorted I spent last Thursday as my first work from home day. I did make an effort to keep the length of the phone calls down as this is still the last unknown as I have no real idea what my call costs are going to be. I am set up with skype and could skype out for those longer distance connections if needed.
Any bulk printing I will get done at the office and collect on the days that I am in the office for the rest I have a printer at home that will be very adequate in meeting my needs.
So all set up and people to call without making the drive. So far so good and one of the biggest worries for a home based workforce is discipline but with me that does not seem to be a problem so far in fact I am seeming to work longer hours as I check emails early in the morning and again late into the evening. I guess there had to be a bonus for the office too.
