UNWIND: Websites etc.

Website Review: GeekSugar
Tallulah Habib
Who said you had to choose between being a girl and being a geek?

If you are one of those girl geeks who is adverse to pink, thinks fashion is a patriarchal social construct and believes the sexiest thing in the world is the number pi, then this site is possibly not for you. However, just because you're a geek doesn't mean you can't embrace your feminine side too.

GeekSugar is a website where nerdy meets sassy. It is part of The Sugar Network, a group of sites aimed specifically at women of all ages. Some content is shared between the sites which is great because no one can fit so neatly into one little box.

You may baulk at the amount of pink in the design (butterflies and flowers would not be out of place), but the content is interesting, entertaining and informative.

There are all the articles you'd expect to find between the pages of a glossy magazine, but with an online twist. Features include a monthly selection of gadget “must haves”, articles on celebrities, and, finally putting to rest all doubt that girl gamers do exist, there is a section specifically dedicated to gaming. There are also reviews, giveaways, tips, quizzes and a list of celebrity gadgets to add to the magazine feel. However, all content is completely interactive, allowing you to comment, vote and/or send feedback via e-mail.

It may look like a magazine, it may even read like one, but GeekSugar has its feet planted firmly on the web, with daily updates, fun online games, and even interactive community forums that include the ability to start your own group.

Whether you're simply looking for a good read, or want to spend some time hanging out with like-minded people, if you're a girly geek, GeekSugar is worth a few minutes in your busy daily schedule.
