Website review: www.wix.com

Build a website in a flash
Creating your own website has never been easier. Flash-based Wix.com appeals to beginners and pros alike. Everyone has a personal domain these days; well, almost everyone. If you’re interested in getting one locally, just visit co.za or contact the company that will host the domain, as they might be able to do it on your behalf. Alternately, you can create one on www.wix.com, which will be prefixed with that URL.
Once you have your own space on the web, the big question is, what is it going to look like? Choosing a blog template or theme is not as simple as it sounds. We speak from experience. You want a personal look and want it to reflect bits of who you are and not look like some generic template.
That’s where www.wix.com comes in. It offers a whole lot of Flash-based templates, which should simplify things quite a bit. They are fresh, funky and different. Depending on what you will be blogging about, you can choose from the various theme types like design, photography, food, music, art, etc.
Each theme is designed to give the best exposure for the type of content that will be showcased. For example, a food template will spotlight photos, and a consulting template will have text boxes on the homepage.
Once you select a theme, just click on ‘edit’ to customise it to your liking. It’s a fairly simple process. Click on anything you want to edit, and you will see options for customising, whether it’s text or photos. You can also add effects and animations. Themes are multimedia- or widget-ready, depending on your needs.
When all tweaking and personalising is done, you can preview the website before saving it. You can then choose to e-mail or embed the code or, alternately, publish it directly to your newly created Wix site. If wanting to use the template on a personal domain, you need to upgrade your account to ‘premium’, which will cost $4.95 a month on a basic package.
Wix.com is an ideal platform if you’re looking to create a website for a business and are pressed for time. You can get it up and running in an hour, if you have all the information and pictures on hand.
